Birthday Traditions

It was my birthday yesterday and I had a wonderful day. In my house we have a couple of birthday traditions and it's so much fun.

Tradition number one: breakfast in bed. This is the one day I definitely indulge and have whatever I want. Some years it's pancakes, other years bacon and hash browns and whatever catches my fancy. We have a breakfast in bed tray which I inherited from my grandparents after they died and it's the perfect thing for breakfast in bed because you don't have to worry too much about the plate sliding off into the bed with you.

Tradition number two: the birthday song. Sure there's the traditional Happy Birthday song, but really if you want to really get into the birthday groove, you can't go past the Happy Happy Birthday song. It always makes me smile and do a little jig.

Tradition number three: Unwrapping presents in bed. Usually this happens before the breakfast in bed, because I mean to say, who can wait?! This year my wonderful husband got me something that I've been wanting for ages. A onesie with hoodie and inbuilt feet/slippers. OMG I love it so much. It's like constantly being wrapped in a warm hug.

Tradition number four: Your choice to do whatever the hell you want on the day. So what did I choose? I've recently rediscovered Suzanne Brockmann's Troubleshooter series and I'm glomming them like there's no tomorrow. Yesterday I started on Hot Target (of course wrapped up in my onesie), before heading out to visit my in-laws for cake, then on to the shops to spend the vouchers that my husband suggested they get me for my birthday, so I could buy a brand new Kobo Aura H2O. I'm so excited to have a waterproof e-reader so I can read in the bath without worrying about dropping it! Then it was back home so I could finish the book! Bliss.

Tradition number five: the birthday song #2. When I turned 30 my husband made me a CD of all the songs that were number one in the week of my birthday - a kind of your life in music. Since that day, every year we look up what's number one and download it to the playlist. This year it was Pink, Just like Fire, which I'm stoked about, because I love Pink.

So what do you do for your birthday?
